We love all the trailer food experiences that one can have in Austin. In fact, at times it seems there are more than one can focus on. So where do you start? Well, per the blog on Mix 94.7, Sara and Cass say that Holy Cacao is a MUST stop for them. We were grateful to make their TOP 10 list of trailers that everyone must enjoy. The Mix 94.7 list is a great because it gives you a good mix (pun intended) of savory and sweet stops if you are planning a trailer tour on your next visit to Austin or even if you already live here.
We would like to clarify one point, however, about 1600 trailers in this town that they reference. There are, in fact, 1600 PERMITS. However, many folks have multiple permits. For example, we have a friend who has a Shaved Ice Stand (GBJB Shaved ICE…they are GREAT, by the way). He had a restricted permit that is still valid because he didn\’t always have cream to add to his shaved ice. He then added that service so he was required to get an unrestricted permit, therefore giving him TWO permits for one business. We have seen many businesses open and subsequently close after realizing it\’s not the gravy train (ok, we can\’t quit being punny) they thought it would be…it\’s hard work! Regardless, their permits are still valid even though the businesses have closed.
We love regular food (our newest obsession is Foreign & Domestic- try the Ditali and Cheese with Braised Oxtail- YUM) AND trailer food (our newest obsession here is Cazamance- Senegalese, West African fare that is in the new Rainey Street district) and are hard pressed to find 1600 trailers in this town. So, that being said, there are certainly lots of great choices for eating out in Austin, whether your restaurant has wheels or walls of brick!
